Sourced in person during our visit to Belize. Andrea of Junajpu, San Miguel, Toldeo, Belize. Together with husband Martin, Andrea owns and operates Junajpu Chocolate. Along with the 2 women she employs to grind cacao on the metate (curved grindstone), Andrea makes chocolate and runs classes in her small family business. Martin spends time in the field tending to the cacao and manages a modest fermentary. They ferment their own cacao and also buy wet cacao from farmers around them.
Andrea's mother made chocolate, Martin's grandfather a cacao farmer. We were lucky enough to meet both Andrea and Martin this summer, taste fresh direct from their garden and purchase a sample of their cacao.
It was a pleasure and privilege to meet both, to taste their cacao & chocolates and to hear them speak with such insight and love for cacao, the people and opportunities it affords us all.
Protecting fine genetics with very long term vision, absolute focus on quality and equality, treating cacao and community in the way you'd want, it was a meeting of minds and hearts and we were so happy to buy what chocolate we could carry and what cacao they could spare during our unplanned drop-in.
Their cacao makes outstanding chocolate we offer 8 individually numbered bars today. We are working on a way to bring more to the UK.
